I’m playing another set in the Music Kafe in Westend next Saturday. The plan is to also do a tune or two with Matt Lunson who will also be doing a set. He’s pretty darn good (probably because he lived in Ireland so long) so check him out. We are playing from 4. See you there.
Hey, I’m playing at the Music Kafe today at 3.30 in Westend. If you are around do drop in. It’s only a 40 min set of covers and originals so I’ll be finished shortly after 4. See you there..
Hey. So I’m back with another song. My old friend Brain Heffernan requested ‘Jacksonville Skyline’ by Ryan Adams. This is a great song about Ryan Adams’ hometown named, you guessed it, ‘Jacksonville’. I had never heard it before though I have heard a lot of his stuff before. The only unfortunate thing about Ryan Adams is that his name is so simular to the lesser (imo) but more popular Brian Adams.
I really think Ryan Adams is one of the more gifted songwriters in recent years. He has a very original quality while being influenced by older songwriters such as Neil Young and older country music. Though I generally dislike country music I do like the subtlety of it in Ryan Adams music. It’s a bit folk and a bit poppy which gives him that unique twist that has given him the respect of his musical peers.
I hope you all had a great time. I’m still here in Brisbane and though it has gone through a rough time after the floods, things are slowly getting back to normal. I live on high ground so all is good with me.
In the meantime I have managed to record a cover of another Kings of Leon song off their new album. The song is Pyro and I have heard it a few times on the radio so some of you may be familiar with it. It’s a relatively simple (like myself) song with three chords which suits me fine just now.
I went to New Zealand for a few days over the holidays and it is such a beautiful place to visit. It reminded me a lot of Ireland but with way bigger mountains. I took a bus trip around and spent a lot of time staring out the window listening to new music which had put a fire in my belly for creating some more original stuff myself. Its not a resolution, and though some of you may take it as a threat, it’s not. Just drop by more often as there will be more posts!
This song has been a work in progress; I have been dipping in and out of it for the last 7 years now and have finally finished something. I don’t explain lyrics but this one has some special sentiments for me.
The video was taken at a reserve near were I live. It’s a nice little oasis in the city. I live on a busy road so it was a nice break. I was hoping to see some snakes but perhaps it’s just as well I didn’t. They have plenty of the poison variety here and I don’t know which is which. Enjoy.
My old friend Ann Burke (now Anne Haines) challenged me a while back to cover this song by Daft Punk. Ann used to be in a band with me in College. She now lives in Canada with her husband Ben and spends a lot of time in snow with huskies judging by her facebook pics. It looks amazing.
I love Daft Punk and their video’s down the years have been fab. I didn’t like how they teamed up with Kanye West a while back though. It seemed like a bit of a sell out. I like their style too with the helmets etc. Are they related to the stig off Top Gear I wonder?
I hope you like the vid, it was a bit painful to do. That’s all for now. I’ll be back with some originals next time which will be free to download of course. Don’t offer me money for downloading. The offers are very generous, especially that guy from Nigeria. He’s a big fan and is always emailing me wanting to put money into my account to mind or something. It’s free Ozioma. Enjoy it. Take Care. Gav
At the moment gavsgarage.com is little more than a showcasing website for my music endeavours. However, I have decided to make the site a little more exciting and active by featuring other artists off YouTube. Since joining YouTube, I have come across some great talent and though I am not a very active member I don’t have to search far to find amazing stuff.
I am not sure what format it will take yet. Maybe an artist will be featured fortnightly or perhaps weekly if I have the time. Maybe the featured artist will record a requested cover for gavsgarage.com. I’m not sure yet but I hope it will evolve naturally so check back in the next few weeks for updates. Gav.
I recorded this cover a couple of years ago for a radio competition on an Irish radio station called Today FM. I didn’t win but I’m happy with what I submitted. There is no video for this as it was recorded before I began YouTubing. I could have done a music video of myself washing the dishes or something but I guesses nobody would have been into that. Or would they?? I think if Lady Gaga did a music video of herself washing dishes it would probably get hits. But then again I’m no lady Gaga. Thank God. I just couldn’t wake up every morning having to make an outfit out of tin foil and twine to get noticed. I tried that and it just didn’t work out for me. Not enough tin foil the cop told me.
I love the Thin Lizzy live version above. Alot of energy there. I’m having doubts about putting up original versions now as they make me look bad. Maybe I should get really crappy versions and put them up instead. I’d just be posting mine twice then wouldn’t I?
Hey all. Here’s a cover of a tune by the Shin’s. It’s called ‘New Slang’ and was requested by my good friend Emma Wade. She requested this quite some time ago. If she was paying me for this I’d probably have lost the job by now and not got paid. But here it is. Contact me for bank details please Emma.
Myself and Nat were having a few drinkies the other week in Brissie and I decided to ring people at home. I managed to get in contact with a few people and Emma included. I woke her up so sorry about that Emma. The ol’ 9 hours difference can be tough sometimes but not when you are drinking; you just ring anyway – ha! Anyway, Emma was kind enough to chat for a bit to a rambling idiot the other side of the globe.
I saw the movie ‘Garden State’ a couple of years ago and I really liked it. ‘New Slang’ was the lead song for the movie. It’s a nostalgic sounding song and I experimented making it faster and louder but the meaning got lost so I stuck to the low key quality of it. I think the beginning of the song was used in some TV ad at some stage a while back, so that may be the familiar part to some. Below is the original song incorporating some of the movie clips.
